Pete Philly is an Aruba-born, Dutch-based singer, rapper, songwriter, and performer whose music brings together hip-hop, soul, jazz, funk, and contemporary R&B. Known for his distinctive vocal delivery, melodic flow, and thoughtful lyrics, Pete Philly has developed a musical identity that moves effortlessly between rap and singing. His approach to music is rooted in storytelling, rhythmic experimentation, and a deep appreciation for different musical traditions. Whether performing as a solo artist or collaborating with other musicians, Pete Philly combines lyrical intelligence with an instinct for memorable melodies and expressive performances. Over the years, he has become one of the recognisable voices in Dutch hip-hop, earning international attention for his ability to bring together musical sophistication and accessible songwriting.
Pete Philly first made a major impact as one half of the influential duo Pete Philly & Perquisite, alongside Dutch producer and composer Perquisite. The two artists joined forces in 2003, developing a distinctive sound that combined hip-hop with live jazz instrumentation, soul, and electronic influences. Their debut album, “Mindstate”, released in 2005, received widespread critical acclaim and was distributed internationally, including releases in Europe, North America, and Japan. The project featured collaborations with artists such as Talib Kweli, CeeMajor, and Senna, helping establish the duo's international reputation. Their second album, “Mystery Repeats”, followed in 2007, entering the Dutch album charts at number one and producing the single of the same name, which reached the Dutch Top 40. Their achievements included the Essent Award, the Zilveren Harp, and the Kink FM NightLiveXS Award, alongside nominations for the Edison Awards, 3FM Awards, TMF Awards, and MTV Europe Music Awards. The duo also toured extensively across Europe, Japan, South Africa, and the United States.
Musically, Pete Philly is defined by an open-minded approach that draws on a wide range of influences. His style combines conscious hip-hop, soulful melodies, jazz-inspired arrangements, funk rhythms, and electronic production, creating music that is difficult to place within a single genre. His lyrics often explore identity, personal growth, social observations, and the complexities of human experience. After Pete Philly & Perquisite went their separate ways in 2009, Pete continued developing his solo career, releasing the “Open Loops” project and his debut solo album “One” in 2011. Subsequent releases, including “Lift”, demonstrated his continued interest in exploring new sounds and creative collaborations. His musical versatility has also led to work with artists including Jeangu Macrooy, Melle Jutte, C-Mon & Kypski, and Naaz. In 2024, he reunited with Perquisite for “Eon”, their first studio album together in many years, bringing their characteristic blend of hip-hop, soul, jazz, funk, and world music into a new chapter.
Pete Philly's connection with Vokall Records is reflected in his collaboration with producer collective .multibeat and singer GINGE on "Fly Over", released through Vokall Records in April 2024. Through "Fly Over", Vokall brought together different musical backgrounds in a release that celebrates collaboration, individuality, and the continuing evolution of contemporary soul and hip-hop.
Live performance has always been an essential part of Pete Philly's artistic identity. Throughout his career, he has performed at major festivals and venues across Europe and internationally, developing a reputation for energetic, musically rich shows. His work with Perquisite has included performances at Lowlands, North Sea Jazz, Sziget, Exit Festival, and Summerjam, among many others. Following their reunion in 2023, Pete Philly & Perquisite returned to the stage with a major concert at Amsterdam's AFAS Live, followed by an international album tour in 2024 and a Dutch theatre tour in 2025. Pete Philly's ability to move between rhythmic rap passages, melodic vocal performances, and improvisational musical moments gives his shows a distinctive character. His performances combine the energy of hip-hop with the spontaneity of live musicianship, creating an engaging experience for audiences.
Today, Pete Philly continues to explore new creative directions as a solo artist and through his renewed partnership with Perquisite. His career reflects a rare combination of lyrical depth, musical curiosity, international experience, and a willingness to experiment across genres.
