GINGE

GINGE, the artist name of Dutch singer-songwriter Renée Rijpstra, is known for her distinctive voice, colourful personality and adventurous approach to contemporary R&B and neo-soul. Originally from Leeuwarden and now based in Utrecht, she creates music that blends soulful vocals, jazz influences, pop melodies and electronic production. With lyrics rooted in personal experiences and a sound that moves between intimate storytelling and upbeat grooves, GINGE has developed an identity that is entirely her own within the Dutch music scene.

GINGE first attracted attention with her debut EP “Belly” in 2021, an eight-track project exploring love, heartbreak, womanhood, vulnerability and the importance of standing your ground. The release introduced listeners to her warm yet expressive vocal style and songwriting, earning positive attention from music platforms including 3voor12. She continued developing her sound with the mini-album “Bummer” in 2022, which brought a more playful and optimistic energy to her music. In 2024, she released her debut album “Playing Around”, further expanding her musical world and demonstrating her willingness to experiment with different styles and moods.

GINGE's musical identity draws inspiration from the wider British R&B and neo-soul scene. Her music combines soulful melodies and jazz-inspired harmonies with contemporary beats, electronic textures and infectious rhythms. Her lyrics often begin with observations and personal experiences, using songwriting as a way to understand emotions, relationships and the complexities of everyday life. This balance between honesty, humour, vulnerability and confidence gives GINGE's music its distinctive character.

Her background in theatre also contributes to her approach as a performer. GINGE brings a strong sense of storytelling and personality to the stage, combining expressive vocals with colourful styling and energetic movement. She has performed at festivals including ESNS, Into The Great Wide Open and MS Dockville, and her live collaboration with Utrecht-based musical collective .multibeat has become an important part of her development. In November 2024, she celebrated “Playing Around” with a sold-out show at Amsterdam's Paradiso, marking a significant milestone in her live career.

GINGE's connection with Vokall Records is closely linked to her collaborations with .multibeat. In February 2024, she joined the trio and drummer Jon Ari on “Cold Nights”, a groove-led track exploring attraction, mixed signals and the games that can develop between two people. The collaboration continued with “Fly Over”, featuring GINGE and Dutch rapper Pete Philly, released through Vokall Records on April 19, 2024. Both tracks also appear on .multibeat's album “Channel Island”, a collaborative project that brings together the trio's jazz-influenced production and a diverse group of guest vocalists. These Vokall releases highlight GINGE's ability to move naturally between neo-soul, R&B and more rhythm-driven musical settings.

With her expressive voice, distinctive songwriting and open-minded approach to collaboration, GINGE continues to explore the space between R&B, neo-soul, jazz and pop. From the personal reflections of “Belly” to the playful spirit of “Playing Around” and her collaborations with .multibeat and Vokall Records, she has built a catalogue that reflects both musical curiosity and artistic independence. GINGE remains an exciting name in the Dutch alternative soul and R&B scene, bringing warmth, individuality and a strong sense of character to everything she creates.
