Luna Maki
Luna Maki is a Dutch musical collective from Amersfoort, bringing together Afrobeat, hip-hop and psychedelic grooves in a sound the band describes as “psychedelic afro flow”. Led by frontman Roger Makizodila, the group has grown into a ten-piece ensemble, combining powerful rhythms, live instrumentation, soulful melodies and thought-provoking lyrics. With an approach that puts musicianship, movement and collective creativity at its centre, Luna Maki is building a distinctive identity in the Dutch live music scene.
Before releasing its first official single, Luna Maki had already made a strong impression on the festival circuit. The group performed at major events including ESNS (Eurosonic Noorderslag), Wildeburg, Wilde Weide, Into the Woods, Footprints and Paaspop, building a reputation through energetic live performances. In 2024, the band also became part of a talent-development collaboration between KOSMIK x No Man's Land and Kultlab, giving the musicians opportunities to develop their sound and reach wider audiences. Their debut single, “Killa's on da Loose”, arrived in September 2025, introducing the band's distinctive blend of African rhythms, funky horns, swinging percussion and sharp social commentary to streaming audiences.
The musical identity of Luna Maki draws inspiration from Afrobeat pioneers such as Fela Kuti, Tony Allen and Ebo Taylor, while incorporating elements of modern hip-hop and psychedelic music. The result is a rich, layered sound built around hypnotic grooves, expressive basslines, intricate percussion, guitar and colourful brass arrangements. The band balances carefully constructed compositions with room for improvisation, allowing each musician to bring their own personality into the music. Rather than simply creating dance tracks, Luna Maki aims to make music that invites listeners to get lost in the rhythm while discovering new details with every listen.
Beneath the infectious grooves, Luna Maki's songwriting explores themes of identity, personal freedom, self-reflection and social awareness. Frontman Roger Makizodila uses lyrics as a way to question assumptions and encourage listeners to think independently. Songs such as “Killa's on da Loose” challenge misleading appearances and abuses of power, while “Breaking Free” explores the process of letting go of expectations and discovering who you want to become. This combination of danceable music and deeper subject matter gives Luna Maki a creative identity that reaches beyond the dancefloor.
On March 27, 2026, Luna Maki released its long-awaited debut album, “Eclipse” , through Vokall Records. The eleven-track album captures the full range of the collective's sound, moving between psychedelic Afrobeat, hip-hop influences, atmospheric passages and powerful live grooves. Tracks including “The Last Sunrise”, “Breaking Free”, “Concrete Jungle”, “Killa's on da Loose” and “Angels of the Sun” reveal different sides of the band's musical and lyrical vision. Created with producer Simon Akkermans, the album brings together the ideas developed by the collective over years of live performances, translating their energetic stage presence into a recorded musical journey. “Eclipse” is more than a debut: it introduces the wider world and message that Luna Maki has been building through its performances.
With “Eclipse” now establishing its recorded catalogue, Luna Maki continues to develop as one of the Netherlands' distinctive live collectives. Its combination of traditional African rhythms, modern hip-hop, psychedelic textures and socially conscious songwriting creates a sound that is both deeply rhythmic and intellectually engaging. Through its collaboration with Vokall Records, the band has brought its ambitious musical vision to a wider audience. Whether experienced on record or through the energy of a full live performance, Luna Maki invites listeners to dance, reflect and discover something new within the groove.
