Zap Mama

Zap Mama, the musical project of Belgian-Congolese singer, songwriter, composer, and performer Marie Daulne, has established itself a distinctive voice in international Afro-European music. Since emerging in the early 1990s, Zap Mama has gained worldwide recognition for its innovative approach to vocal polyphony, African musical traditions, and contemporary soul. Her debut album, Adventures in Afropea, released through David Byrne's Luaka Bop label, became the best-selling non-compilation album in the label's history and reached number one on the Billboard World Music Charts. Its follow-up, Sabsylma, earned a Grammy nomination for Best World Music Album, further establishing Zap Mama as an internationally respected and influential musical force. Throughout her career, Marie Daulne has collaborated with renowned artists including Erykah Badu, The Roots, Al Jarreau, Sergio Mendes, Common, and Black Eyed Peas, continually expanding the boundaries of contemporary world music.

What distinguishes Zap Mama is her extraordinary ability to use the human voice as a complete musical instrument. Drawing inspiration from her Belgian and Congolese heritage, Marie Daulne developed a distinctive musical language combining traditional African vocal techniques, intricate harmonies, polyphonic singing, and contemporary rhythms. Her sound moves effortlessly between Afro-pop, soul, gospel, jazz, funk, and hip-hop, creating a musical identity that is both deeply rooted in tradition and open to modern influences. From the predominantly a cappella arrangements of her early work to the more rhythmically driven productions of albums such as A Ma Zone and Ancestry in Progress, Zap Mama has continually evolved while remaining committed to the expressive possibilities of the human voice. Her artistic philosophy celebrates cultural diversity and the connections between African and European musical traditions, helping introduce the concept of Afropean identity to international audiences.

Live performance has always been central to the identity of Zap Mama. Known for her captivating stage presence, remarkable vocal versatility, and infectious energy, Marie Daulne creates performances that combine musical sophistication with spontaneity, movement, and humour. Her ability to layer harmonies, improvise with vocal textures, and move between languages and musical traditions makes every performance a distinctive experience. Over the years, Zap Mama has appeared on some of the world's most prestigious stages, including the Hollywood Bowl, Montreux Jazz Festival, Lollapalooza, Central Park in New York, and the Olympia in Paris. Her collaborations with exceptional musicians and performers have further strengthened her reputation as an artist capable of connecting cultures and generations through music. Whether performing intimate vocal arrangements or full-band Afro-fusion productions, Zap Mama brings an unmistakable sense of creativity, freedom, and musical expression to the stage.

A new chapter in Zap Mama's musical journey comes through her collaboration with Vokall Records on "Déjà", a special duet with her daughter, Belgian-Congolese singer and songwriter K.ZIA, released in May 2026. The track marks their first full-fledged musical duet and brings together two generations of artists with closely connected but distinct musical identities. Combining K.ZIA's contemporary alternative R&B influences with the distinctive vocal character and Afro-European musical heritage of Zap Mama, "Déjà" is an intimate and expressive collaboration that explores the relationship between mother and daughter. The release also represents an important moment in their shared artistic journey, laying the musical foundation for their joint live project, Heritage é Motion. Through this collaboration, Vokall brings together two generations of exceptional female talent in a release that celebrates family, cultural heritage, musical independence, and creative connection. For Zap Mama, "Déjà" demonstrates that her artistic journey continues to evolve, finding new ways to connect her musical roots with contemporary sounds and future generations of artists.
